Biodiesel is produced when oils or fats, methanol and a catalyst undergo a reaction in a rather slow batch process, or in a continuous transesterification process in which only oils or fats and methanol react spontaneously and rapidly at high pressure and temperature.

Production of biodiesel entails that various processes take place in auxiliary units, sometimes in hazardous areas, such as heating steam generation, wastewater purification, oil mills or cooling plants.

Siemens process instruments, drive and automation technology monitor the biodiesel production, control pumps or agitators, and control the temperature, level or pressure, even in hazardous areas. All components are of course completely integrated in the SIMATIC PCS 7 automation system.
