Modular remote terminal units (RTUs) based on cost-effective SIMATIC S7-1200 controllers are particularly suitable for applications with a low degree of automation. They consist of a controller and a communication processor (CP). The CP establishes the communication connection to the control center. Communication takes place via the usual telecontrol protocols. The CPs enable cyclical and event-driven transmission of measured values, count values and setpoints including time stamps as well as commands and alarms to the control center and between the RTUs. If the communication connection fails, they buffer the data. They also offer comprehensive diagnostic options for fast and meaningful analysis of the station status.
See here how a remote terminal unit based on SIMATIC S7-1200 is configured:
There are different versions of communication processors for SIMATIC S7-1200 controllers. The CPs use the standard telecontrol protocols TeleControl Basic, DNP3, SINAUT ST7 or IEC 60870-5-104.
They enable the RTU to be connected to the control center via mobile wireless (GSM/GPRS, LTE) or other public/ private networks, e.g. the Internet. This is done either through an integrated mobile wireless module or an external router – e.g. SCALANCE M – which is connected to the Ethernet interface of the CP. The CPs can also be connected to the SINEMA Remote Connect management platform. This allows very simple establishment of secured VPN connections.

Data buffering if connection is broken
Up to 64,000 values
Up to 16,000 data frames (ST7) or 64,000 values (DNP3, IEC)
Firewall / VPN
Connection to SINEMA Remote Connect (for simple establishment of VPN connections)
Yes (as of FW V3.1)
Cost-effective, small and compact hardware design
Buffer for several thousand data values with time stamps to bridge transmission link downtimes
The operating personnel is informed immediately with alarms via e-mail or user-specific text messages about statuses and values from the process
Simple centralized engineering with STEP 7 in the TIA Portal: cyclical or event-driven transmission of measured values, setpoints or alarms can be carried out in just a few simple steps without programming.
VPN and Firewall security features provide protection against data manipulation and external access.
Combination with SINEMA Remote Connect makes secured remote access to S7-1200 stations very easy.
