Automation in biogas production

Biogas is produced by fermenting substrates with the exclusion of air to generate a combustible gas containing between 40% and 75% methane. That makes biogas, which primarily comprises methane, a high value source of energy. The quantity of biogas generated depends on factors such as: temperature, residence time and the composition of the substrate in the fermenter.

Siemens automation technology and process instruments monitor the production conditions during fermentation and control, for example: temperature, foam formation and gas pressure. The Siemens’ continuous gas analysis allows the supervision of the fermentation process and the quality control of the biogas generated. Siemens drive technology is integrated into the automation. It is not only suitable for driving pumps, agitators, valves and heat exchangers, but also for use in explosion protection zones, such as zone 1.
