The growing significance of energy efficiency is increasingly finding its way into standards, directives, and laws at both the national and international levels. The consequence is the IEC standard and efficiency classes.
The ErP directive (ErP = Energy related Products) and EU directive 2005/32/EC are concerned with energy consumption and the efficiency of induction motors in the industrial environment, and have now been transposed into national law in all EU countries. They are essentially based on IEC standard 60034-30: 2008, which defines three efficiency classes (from IE1 – IE3) for 50 and 60 Hz motors.
