SIMATIC PCS 7 Tutorial

Tasks

This tutorial covers the following tasks:

  • Creation of the hardware components:

  • Setup of the required communication connections.

  • Use of the "Advanced Process Library (APL)".

  • Interconnection of the digital signatures for the process objects with each other.

  • Simulation of the configured process operation in the OS runtime.

We assume that you are already familiar with working on a PC and know the basics of automation technology.

SIMATIC PCS 7 basics

What is SIMATIC PCS 7?

The process control system SIMATIC PCS 7 is an integral component of Totally Integrated Automation (TIA). Totally Integrated Automation, is the unique platform offered by Siemens for unified and customer-specific automation in all sectors of the production, process and hybrid industries.

SIMATIC PCS 7 takes care of the standard process control tasks. You can also use SIMATIC PCS 7 to automate secondary processes such as filling, packaging or input and output logistics for a production location.

Process data are available across the enterprise via the connection of the the automation level to the IT system. The enables you to centrally execute evaluation, coordination and optimization of manufacturing and business processes.

The modular architecture of SIMATIC PCS 7 is based on selected hardware and software components. The PCS 7 plant is linked to the enterprise information network via standardized interfaces based on international industrial standards for data exchange.

What is a PCS 7 project?

Projects are created on an Engineering System (ES for short). The ES offers a number of different applications. Every application has a graphical interface, which is easy to use and provides you with an overview of your configuration data.

You will become familiar with the following applications in the course of the tutorial:

  • SIMATIC Manager - the central application and the gateway to all the others you will be using to create a PCS 7 project. SIMATIC Manager provides you with a platform to develop your entire project.

  • HW Config - enables you to configure all the hardware for a plant, e.g. CPUs, power supply, communications processors.

  • CFC editor and SFC editor - used to create cyclic automation logic and sequential control systems.

  • PCS 7 OS in conjunction with various editors - executes OS configuration.

What is SIMATIC Manager?

SIMATIC Manager is the central application of PCS 7. It enables you to open most of the applications where you need to make settings for the PCS 7 project.

Requirements

The tutorial requires the following:

  • Engineering Station (ES)

  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.1 SP1

  • S7 PLCSIM V5.4 or higher

Setting up the automation system and operator station

This section teaches you how to create the following hardware components in SIMATIC Manager.

  • The automation system (AS) SIMATIC S7 400

  • Your PC as Operator Station (OS)

In additional steps you edit the communications connection between the AS and OS.

Configuring function block diagrams

This section teaches you how to use the templates from the "Advanced Process Library (APL)" for the process objects of your PCS 7 project.

Then you set the parameters for the function charts (CFCs) for the process objects.

Configuring the sequential control system

This section teaches you how to configure the sequential control system (SFC) for your PCS 7 project in the SFC editor.

Configuring the process picture and units

This section teaches you how to configure your preconfigured "Unit(1)".
You will then create "Unit_B" from the copy of "Unit_A".

Assigning signals

This section teaches you how to link the software to the inputs and outputs of the hardware with a view to controlling the hardware and detecting/processing process signals, for example.

Compiling and downloading objects

You have completed all preparations for compiling and downloading the objects. Use the "Compile and Download Objects" dialog box to configure all the required settings.

Operating the project in the simulator

To simulate the PCS 7 project, you begin by starting simulation for the AS.
Once you have started process mode for the OS, you operate and monitor your PCS 7 project.
