Description

Siemens equips rotary machines of the leading worldwide manufacturers with automation and drive technology. Rotary machines are used primarily in the production of high-quality drinking vessels (e.g. wine glasses). Various glass forming processes are deployed:

Blow-blow and press-blow processes are found most frequently in the hollow glass production. The glass product is manufactured in two steps: In a preform, the so-called gob is created (blow or press process); the final form is blown in the second process step.

For the pressing, the glass melt is first fed into the form after which the pressing punch is lowered hydraulically or pneumatically into the form. After solidification, the punch is withdrawn.

During the centrifugation, a low viscosity glass melt is fed into the form. The form is then rotated to distribute the glass.

Although most drives in modern rotary machines are purely electrical, there are applications in which hydraulic drives are used to advantage. The most prominent example is the glass press. A conventional hydraulic system based on valve technology, however, wastes a large amount of energy in the phases of the pressing process in which the pressing cylinder does not need to perform any work although the motor must continue to run. If, however, the asynchronous motor is replaced with a highly-dynamic servomotor, it is possible to supply only the amount of energy actually required in the associated phase of the pressing process. The power consumption so can be reduced by as much as 50%.
